Tips for Taking the Perfect Family Photo

The perfect family photo is one that captures a moment in time that will never be repeated. It can be a happy moment, a silly moment, or just an ordinary day. The most important aspect of your family photography session, is that is captures the essence of your family. One thing is for sure: the perfect family photo is one that you will cherish forever.

The following are some tips to take the perfect family photo

Choose a great location and the time of day

In Orange County we have so many great locations for a family photography session. The beaches in Laguna, Newport and San Clemente are among my favorite locations for a photography session. I also love to shoot in the fields in Laguna Canyon, The Mission in San Juan Capistrano and the surrounding urban areas.

The best time of day for a photography session is definitely at golden hour. Golden hour is the term for the time of day one hour after sunrise or one hour before sunset. Golden hour lighting is soft and dreamy and compliments any skin tone. To prevent squinting eyes, and hard shadows I recommend booking your session during golden hour.

Sunny days are great, but overcast days are even better for family portraits. The overcast sky provides soft photo lighting and ensures everyone has wide open eyes (no squinting because of the harsh sun).

It's important to dress appropriately for a family photo shoot.

You don't want to wear something that will make you uncomfortable or that your family members may not be comfortable with.

The following are some guidelines for what you should wear to a family photo shoot:

Wear clothes that are comfortable and appropriate for the weather.
Wear clothes that are the same color as your skin tone, or a shade lighter or darker than your skin tone.
Wear clothes with no logos, graphics, or words on them.
Wear clothes with no visible holes in them (unless it is intentional like torn jeans for seniors)
Choose two colors and then a complimentary third color and have everyone dress in those color tones and hues. Clothing doesn't have to be identical, it just needs to be coordinated and look great.
Wear the appropriate outfit for the location.

Kids & Family Posing Tips

Let's start with getting your kids comfortable in front of the camera. It is really important when you arrive at the session, that we give your kids a little time to warm up to the photographer. Me and my team will usually begin each session with getting to know your kids. We will ask them questions about their favorite activities or what they like to study in school. Please allow your kids to answer these questions for themselves as it is our way of warming them up before we begin the photography session.

Once we get started, we will spend a lot of time giving you and your kids directions on what to do, where to stand or words to say. This is all in an effort to move towards natural expressions and interaction between family members. We start each session with more structured poses, and then move towards lots of tickles, giggles, funny words and phrases, etc. These all help your photographer capture the true essence of your family at the photography session.

While we definitely want to get everyone looking at the camera and smiling, we also want to capture the in between moments.

Pets at your family photography session: Don't forget about your furry friends.

We always encourage you to include pets in your family photography session. The most important thing to consider when including pets is the location of the photography session. We need to ensure that dogs or other pets are allowed at the photography location so we don't run into any issues. It is also encourage to bring treat and toys to the session so your photographer get the family, including your pet, looking at the camera.

Looking for the perfect locations for your high school senior portraits should be easy. However, with Orange County having literally hundreds of gorgeous locations for a photography session, it can be tough to choose. In this blog post I am going to tell you why I love to photograph in Laguna Beach at the top of the world area and share Noah's senior session.

So how did we settle on top of the world in Laguna Beach for Noah's senior session?

Easy! Before the session, Brittany chatted with his Mom about places that were meaningful both to their family and to Noah. Since the Novick family lives very close to the trails and overlooks at Top of the World they spend a lot of time up there. Between family hikes, and a quiet place to read or play music, this spot has become a family favorite. As an Orange County photographer I always look for locations that are beautiful and significant to the subject.

As a High School senior photographer I look for a location that has some variation in landscape and background. Top of the World is a great photography spot as it has views of the ocean, winding paths, fences and large trees. For each outfit a high school senior brings to the photography session, I try to match the background and create an overall uniform look. Since 99% of our high school seniors choose a custom designed album to display their favorite images, I want a lot of variety and texture in all of the different images of the high school senior.

For Noah's high school senior photography session, we included his guitar, his dog and his family. We even got a chance to hear Noah play! The highlight from Noah session include hearing about him getting into his dream school (Tufts University), his crazy dog getting into some questionable tuna salad and his family and grandparents getting in on the end of the session for a few shots. I feel really fortunate to have been photographing Noah for years. He is an amazing guy with such a great heart. It is a little sad for me when families I have been photographing for years have their first kiddo leave the nest. Worried about how your beach portraits will look on an overcast day? You’re not alone! Many families ask us if their photos will still turn out beautifully during June Gloom —those classic, misty mornings and soft grey skies we often see along the Orange County coast . The truth is, cloudy beach days can create some of the most flattering light for family photography , with soft shadows, creamy skin tones, and a dreamy, diffused glow. In this post, we’ll share why overcast conditions can be perfect for your Laguna Beach portrait session and how to embrace the magic of moody skies in your family photos.

Here are some great reason why you should book your family portrait or senior portrait session on an overcast day!

The cloudy sky acts like a giant softbox. It really makes skin look soft and beautiful. For the ladies that means, softening any fine lines.. Whoop whoop!
It is much easier to open your eyes without sunglasses on an overcast day. So instead of squinty eyes, you get beautiful wide opened eyes.
The clouds keep the temperature nice and cool. These are perfect days for a layered look or a soft warm sweater.
The beach will be much less crowded! That means more spots to photograph your family.

I recently photographed the beautiful Natalie at Heisler Park in Laguna Beach. Despite being chilly, the evening was beautiful. The waves were phenomenal at Rock Pile so we decided to shoot on the cliff with the waves as the background. Even though I have shot in Heisler Park numerous times, last night we discovered some new, amazing vantage points to really capture the beautiful views from Heisler Park.

Here are just a few of my favorite images from the Theilman’s session. It has been such a privilege to document this beautiful family as their kids have grown up. Congratulations to Natalie on her acceptance to San Diego State University. I know she will have an amazing experience!
